INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTION - TAGGING THE ENCLAVE

GROUP DISCUSSIONS

Proximity of signage to intended object/space defines interpretation. Cut and paste of signage to new locations to create new meanings/understanding/discourses. Students and other subcultural groups have a penchant for collecting signs and distributing their own. St. giles has a back street quality Vs SoCo facade. Juxtapostion of manufactured style against evolved style. Implosion Vs explosion. Grid??

"I think that it would be interesting to be informed about what is happening in the other space although we are completely disconnected from it. Maybe somehow the social environment will change as a consequence of a change in the other place."

"we returned to SoCo & documented the graffiti, flyers and stickers in the area to get a sense of how and if they related to the typography I’d already catalogued and the Texas kitsch that René had tracked. Most had their own style and seemed to relate more to Ben’s studies of guerilla signage. After that, René & I had ideas of a set of stickers that might start to comment on the space. The first set would label certain areas as “Counterfeit” or “Bonafide” as determined by their Texas authenticity (completely subjective). The other set would be images of Texas iconography. The less “Texas”y a place was (according to René’s original map) the more stickers we would place in the area. Our group wasn’t able to come up with a satisfactory way to incorporate St. Giles into the idea, so the stickers never made it past the idea stage. We moved on to discussing how signage could comment on both spaces and activities going on in the separate spaces."

GROUP OUTCOME

Rather than using conventional signage, this system works by collecting the iconic physical objects and assembling them with technology that communicates with the environments in much the same way as the 2d signage. In this case however, the virtual or physical environment could be used to assemble a much wider collection of iconic objects from around the world, in an exhibition format. The audience would not only be immersed  within the reactive objects, but they could gain a sense of how the purchase of objects correlate with one another, therefore identifying the emergence of patterns and trends.
