RE:ENGAGE TRANSITIONAL SPACE

How the proactive commuter engages with transitional space.

example2i

From observations of commuter movement through Waterloo Station, London, it was uncovered that a majority of users had become disengaged with transitional pathways, creating a lost dialogue between people. Through the development of an iPhone based application, it was possible to create an interactive system that combined social research with interaction design, to provide a visual understanding of migratory dynamics based upon the collective feelings.

From observations around the train station, mobile phone were identified as integral to the journeys of many people. To harness the potential of mobile technology many people could be integrated into the system without the need to distribute individual supplies, and instead an app could be downloaded by the user and then uploaded automatically each day or by the participant from the comfort of home.

Data is collected via the iPhone, of individuals subconscious emotions based upon the pressure and intensity of individual hand movements and gestures that enables commuters to intuitively record their level of engagement in transitional environments.

When combined with collective data, unique visualisations on wall mounted screens positioned at various locations around the station, enabled people to express the places that influenced changes in personal moods, to provide a graphical representation of the collective journey.
