DYNAMIC LIBRARY CATALOGUE

Dynamic Library Catalogue

The Dynamic Library Catalogue incorporates RFID technology that allows libraries to dynamically map books in relation to user borrowing correlations. By using this system, users will not only be able to keep a visual record of the information they have viewed, but also to see the links between the information, providing them with a greater understanding of the relating contexts of different concepts and theories.

The system consists of a central database that record the details of individual user interactions, the correlation of relational groups, and text catalogue; and in order to generate the mapped locations, adjusts an x,y, and z axis code towards the borrower's predesignated location. Each user will be allocated a designated spreadsheet from which their own RSS feed will be generated. A XML address will be provided that can be entered into any RSS reader of choice. This feed will contain the latest information of chosen publications transferred directly from the publications online content. Registered users will be able to replace their current library cards with RFID embedded cards in order to fully integrate the system with current activities without the need to carry around extra items or devices. RFID tags will also be inserted into the back of magazines and books, and sensors placed at the end of shelves will be able to detect book locations.

Research Tasks Involved

Usability testing of existing system, examining ease of access to new forms of relevant information through observation of students accessing information through keyword searching, search time to find books on library shelves, success rate of found books to books taken.

Users were provided with journals to document the projects that they were searching for, and keywords used to identify possible source texts.

Participants were then asked to record the successful and unsuccessful books that they retrieved from the shelves, along with a brief reasoning for their selection.

Wire-framing and testing of new proposed system.
